Alexandra (Bimbi) Urquhart trained classically as a viola player at Trinity and then the Royal College of Music. She has performed and toured with orchestras, as well as playing for a year in Chile with the Orquesta Filarmonica de Santiago. She played on the album ‘Bad Blood’ by Bastille, and was part of their string quartet at Glastonbury and on the festival circuit. She has recorded as solo viola with singer/songwriter Ben Rusch for his album Architects of Time, as well as playing on Tango Siempre’s album ‘Malandras del Tango’. Alexandra started ‘Bimbi Makes’: a blog and gallery of baking, linocuts and music videos in 2018, in order to bring together what appeared to be disparate strands of creativity. The linocuts took a lead role in the Summer of 2020 and she has since been pursuing this seriously, realising that a creative path suits her very well!
What has creating art meant to you over the last year?
I’ve found an outlet for creativity which has now lodged itself into my lifestyle! This was brewing at the start of the first lockdown, when I was furloughed from my salaried teaching job. I started making linocuts on a regular basis in August 2020 and received a lot of support and encouragement from friends, which led to opening an online shop on Etsy. This has been going strong ever since: meanwhile I’ve been experimenting with different approaches and subject matters in order to find my own distinctive style. The journey continues!
